Marriage Aftermath
The Times has up a great analysis of yesterday’s marriage decision and the huge blow is was to gay rights. Not only did the majority find against the gay couples, but the decision used some distressingly old-school logic, including the assumption that heterosexual marriage needs protecting, that children are better off in a straight families, and—the most damning of all—that sexuality is a “preference,” not an “orientation.” Not much was said about protecting the gay families. The anti-gay marriage forces are in the midst of a victory dance. And worse yet, the New York State ruling will give legal cover to other court cases yet to be decided, including the one in New Jersey.
