25 Years of AIDS

Today is the 25th year since the Centers for Disease Control quietly reported a rare pneumonia in a cluster of five Los Angeles gay men, who would later become the first documented cases of AIDS. We’re not sure what cosmic coincidence would have such an anniversary fall on the very day of President Bush’s press conference supporting the federal marriage amendment, but we were moved by writer Jonathan Rauch’s op-ed in the Time yesterday, arguing that AIDS made the push for gay marriage inevitable.
