Bloomberg’s Shout Out
On his weekly radio address Sunday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg kicked off Gay Pride month by lambasting the federal anti-gay marriage amendment and insisting that he’s ready and willing to start issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. This comes as lawyers are preparing for opening arguments Wednesday in a gay marriage lawsuit before the state’s Court of Appeals. If the Court upholds the original judge’s ruling, then Bloomberg will get his way. The mayor’s being a little disingenuous—he’s technically supporting the anti-gay marriage side in the suits, and part of us just wishes he’d be dramatic and pull a Gavin Newsom in time for Pride weekend. But if whispers about Bloomberg’s presidential aspirations are true, we’d take him over right-wing pandering Giuliani any day.
