Christians Sue to Discriminate

The LA Times has up a piece about the latest in trendy legal tactics to get around those pesky anti-discrimination laws. Conservative Christians are increasingly suing to challenge the sexual orientation policies of workplaces or universities. Their reasoning? Since they find homosexuality immoral, then their being forced to accept it at work or at school means that their religious freedom is being impinged. Which is almost the exactly the reasoning Catholic Charities is using to try to get around anti-discrimination laws in Massachusetts. Do you ever get the feeling there’s an evil mastermind out there sending memos?

[…] Remember our post last week about the LA Times piece on the rise in Christians suing to get around antidiscrimination laws? And remember how we joked that there must be an evil mastermind somewhere pulling the strings? Well it looks nothing less than the U.S. Congress got the memo. There’s a bill pending in the Senate that could amend the 1965 Higher Education Act. The Act is supposed give resources to colleges to allow them to accept more lower-income students, but the amendment would allow Christian and other religious schools an exemption from local antidiscrimination laws, if the laws conflict with the insitution’s “religious and moral goals.” Translation: They’d be allowed to keep out gay people, still get federal funds, and blatantly violate city or state laws that protect gays. The bill’s already passed the House. The Senate committee decided to amend it slightly to make it clear that it’s “…not meant to allow an institution to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability.” The missing magic words, of course, are sexual orientation. Let’s be clear: For all the vague talk of moral mission, this bill is entirely about rolling back protections for gays. […]
