The next governator? New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer encouraged the gay community to keep fighting for gay marriage. The likely Democratic candidation for governor in 2006, Spitzer told the audience at the Empire State Pride Agenda dinner in Rochester, NY, that politicians move slowly, and “Only when you lead and block for us do we move behind you.”
State of the disunion First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then acrimonious child custody battles. The Washington Post look at the flips side of the gay marriage debate, as three child support and custody cases filed by lesbians make their way to the California Supreme Court. The issue at hand: Can a second female parent be treated like a deadbeat dad even though legal marriage isn’t possible? The bigger issue everyone’s watching: If the court treats nasty lesbian separations the same way it treats nasty divorces, then how close is it to ruling that gays in California should have the same rights to marry and be miserable as straights?
Another reason to leave the exes in Texas and move to Vermont No surprise really, but the Texas State Senate approved a proposed consitutional amendment banning gay marriage last Saturday. The amendment will go before voters this November and if approved will make Texas the 15th state to ban same-sex nuptials in its constitution. It’s not yet clear how the ban would affect domestic-partnership benefits, but the amendment’s sponsor Republican Senator Todd Staples did offer a curious silver lining, saying, “Texas is not Alabama. This is not discrimination.”
Or move to England! A lesbian clergywoman and her partner of 16 years will be among the first gay couples to legally marry in the UK, exactly one second after midnight on December 21, when the new Civil Partnership Act goes into effect.
