Daytime televisions’ first lead lesbian character, Bianca Montgomery, walks off into the great Soap Opera Beyond when actress Eden Riegel leaves All My Children this week. Since Bianca came out in 2000, she’s suffered through fraud, thwarted love, a rape, a pregnancy, and her baby’s kidnapping, all the while carrying on a tortured flirtation with her best friend, Maggie. She kissed a girl in 2003 (a daytime TV first), but since then has been relegated to mostly longing glances and really, really meaningful conversations. Let’s not forget though, that when daytime went gay, they went straight to the top. Bianca was nothing less than the daughter of Erica Kane, raging heterosexual and a soap diva among divas. If Bianca could win acceptance from her, then perhaps there’s hope for us all.
